Florist Ribbon Types: A Sample Approval Checklist

Suggested purchasing workflow; not a performance rating.

Choosing florist ribbon types for a bulk order starts with the exact sample, not a promise attached to a material name. This checklist helps a flower shop approve a ribbon for a particular bouquet, wrapping surface and delivery routine.

Use it when changing suppliers, adding a colour or reordering an item whose finish has changed. The checks are suggested shop procedures, not laboratory certification or tests already conducted by WrapStoria.

What to confirm for each ribbon type

Supplier label Sample checks Written confirmation
Satin Compare both faces, folds and the finished knot against your wrapping paper. Fibre, face treatment, width and edge construction.
Grosgrain Assess the ribbed appearance, loop shape and movement of the actual knot. Construction and finish; texture alone is not a grip guarantee.
Organza Check transparency, cut edges and contact with flowers or decorative accessories. Composition, edge finish and any supplier handling instructions.
Paper ribbon or cord Trial bending and tying; check the intended contact with damp packaging. Paper or mixed construction, coating and intended use.

Do not infer waterproofing, load capacity or resistance to fraying from these labels. A decorative ribbon should not become the only support for a heavy bouquet without a suitable design and specific evidence.

How to approve a sample before buying in volume

  1. Define the finished job. Keep the bouquet shape, wrapping paper, closure and handling route consistent for the comparison.
  2. Label each sample. Record supplier reference, colour code, width, stated length and sales unit. Keep the packaging label.
  3. Make the intended finish. Use your normal tools and knot or bow. Observe edge damage, creases and how the knot behaves during handling. Do not apply heat or a curling tool unless the supplier confirms that method is suitable.
  4. Compare appearance under relevant lighting. Place samples beside the actual paper and flowers. Approve colour-critical work from a physical reference rather than a screen image alone.
  5. Run the normal route. Check the completed pack at dispatch and handover. Record movement, marks, loose tails and presentation separately.
  6. Retain the approved reference. Ask the supplier to match the documented specification. Compare incoming rolls with it before preparing a large event order.

How many rolls should you order?

Measure ribbon consumed by representative finished orders, including cutting losses. Use: required length = planned bouquets × measured length per bouquet + your chosen reserve. Divide by confirmed usable length per roll and round up; then convert rolls into the quoted pack unit.

Hypothetical example: 80 bouquets × 0.9 m plus a 4 m reserve gives 76 m. At a confirmed 20 m per roll, that is four rolls before adjusting for pack size. These numbers illustrate the calculation, not a standard consumption rate or a WrapStoria product specification.

Keep an approval record

Record the reference, dimensions, sales unit, approved colour, packing method, observations and accept/retest/reject decision. Retest after a material, finish, width or supplier change; do not silently substitute a similar-looking ribbon.

Questions before ordering

Does a diagonal cut make every ribbon fray-proof?

No universal result is established by the cut direction. Inspect the exact sample and follow the supplier’s finishing guidance.

Is one ribbon type always best for delivery?

Select the complete packaging arrangement through a route trial. A type name does not prove that a particular knot will remain secure.

Where can I discuss samples?
